Can you get to the Internet?
Can you get to the network drive or local server?
If these answer to both of these questions is YES, then you probably don't have a network problem, and should investigate other possibilities.
If these answer to both of these questions is NO, shut your computer down and leave it powered off for a few minutes, then power it on and test your connection again.
If you can reach the network drive or local server but cannot connect to the internet, you may have an internet outage in your area.
If you can reach the internet but cannot connect to the network drive or local server, you may have a problem with your local network.
Next, have a friend perform the same tests from another workstation.
If another workstation is able to connect then the problem is most likley localized to your computer.
If both computers can reach the internet but not the network drive or local server, you should contact your network administrator. They may need to reboot the server. This is typically a last resort, and is usually the sort of thing that can get you fired if you try to do it yourself.
If none of the workstations on your local network can reach the internet or the network drive, power off the cable/dsl modem and router. Wait a few minutes and then turn the modem on. Wait a few more minutes before powering up the router.
If all of the workstations still cannot reach the internet, you may have an network outage in your area and should check with your internet provider.
If all of your workstations still cannot reach the internet OR the network drive/local server, there may be a hardware issue with your modem or router, and you should notify your network administrator.
